SURVIVORS AND WHAT THEY CARRY

by Barbara Mack

Organized and Presented by the

Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust

in Pan Pacific Park

SURVIVORS AND WHAT THEY CARRY is an exhibit of portraits of members of Café Europa, a support group for Holocaust Survivors. sponsored by the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles. Photographer and writer Barbara Mack asked the survivors who volunteered for this project to bring objects from the past or present to hold in their portraits. During the photography sessions, the survivors explained the significance of their objects and spoke about their histories.

The photographer's evocative portraits depict her subjects in an extraordinary light. A trained psychologist, Dr. Mack is fascinated by workaday heroes, finding the humanity and depth in each person she photographs.

The portraits were exhibited in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, in Washington DC at the Russell Rotunda of the United States Senate and in Sacramento for the California Legislature.
